There are three bedrooms on the upper level of the house. The large master bedroom with a high cathedral ceiling is situated to offer a morning beautiful sunrise over the water. This room has lovely water views, a queen size bed, a TV, VCR, DVD and private bath and deck.

The remainder of the upper level contains two charming guest bedrooms - one with two single beds and the other with a Scandinavian double. These sweet guest rooms share a full bath in the immediate hallway. Both guest bedrooms have high cathedral ceilings.

Each of these rooms has varying views that change with the seasons and the window exposure. The master bedroom and its deck look out from a moderate distance upon Menemsha Pond in front, Squibnocket Pond to the right, and Noman’s Island and the Ocean beyond. In some seasons the Vineyard Sound can be seen in the distance. One of the guest bedrooms has a view of the pond and the other looks out at lovely greenery including two oaks and a small perennial garden. The floors are hard wood throughout the upper level.

living room

The lower level has a living room/family area, kitchen, eat in dining room, and study. The kitchen has all of the appliances you would expect in a modern kitchen. The high-ceiling living room/family room has a wood stove, a coach, loveseat, chairs, a Bose sound system, and lighting for reading. The eat-in dining room has a sweet and playful American Indian décor. The study is a quiet room with desk space for work, a FAX machine and lots of books to read or glance at.

Moving outdoors you will find lots of outside decks with soft summer chairs, table and chairs for outside dining, gas grill and hot and cold outdoor shower. There are several perennial gardens that are in bloom at various times and a peaceful hammock hidden away for an afternoon nap or reading.

The ocean beach is about 1-2 miles away. Lobsterville beach, a sound beach that is lovely for children, is about the same distance but can be walked to directly in 15 minutes down the dirt road. Menemsha Beach is also a great beach for children and again a 1-2 mile car ride. And of course, there are endless activities and walks throughout the island.

Welcome to my wonderful home located in Aquinnah (formerly Gay Head) on the island of Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

The land, previously part of a Wampanoag Indian homestead was purchased in 1977 from the estate of the Margaret Webster, a noted Shakespearean actress and director, who lived here for 35 years before her death.

The current home was completed in 1991. It was designed as an environmentally sensitive home for year round use. I wanted this to be a bright home in which the inside of the house and the outside hills and water flowed as one. I was seeking a peaceful retreat in nature, simple elegance, natural beauty, and joyful playfulness. I feel that the architect has achieved these aims as well as the daily process of creating and living in a home that exudes the vibrancy and vitality of life.

I live here most of the year except the summer and short periods in the winter. This is why the house feels like a well cared for home away from home. While here I study, write, and enjoy the beauty of each day. All those who spend time here are considered my guests and many return year after year for retreat, renewal, pleasure, beauty, and the many summer activities.

The house is filled with Asian art as well as African Shona sculptures. For me, each piece captures a certain essence in life which together remind me of the beauty that is all around us on this magical island.

Whether you are seeking a peaceful retreat, a family get-away or a time for summer play I think you will find that this home will fill your needs.
